From the program notes:

Welcome to the Summer Sampler Concert! I am honored to be a part of the first seasonal chamber series celebrating the new piano in the Chapel. When I was invited, I immediately jumped on the chance to move away from the formality of regular Seasonal programming and came up with this themed program inspired by Summer.

As you can see in the formal program list, I have a written a personal reflection or inspiration for each selection. Why is this concert a “Sampler?” In traditional concert format, a sonata movement is rarely performed alone. I chose the First Movement of Beethoven’s “Tempest” Sonata because if reminds me so much of the variety of storms and seas we experience here in Florida. From tiny drops to outright gales, the sudden quiet of the “eye” of a hurricane to the magnificence of sunlit trees glistening with moisture…This movement speaks to me of weather.

The next “Sampler” is in performing the Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood) in 3 groups instead of straight through (1-13) traditional performance practice. Each piece titled and a few are very short (:35) meant to be played without applause in between, with just a few seconds between to allow the “flavor” to linger. I find these memories of childhood like a crystal bowl filled with lovely bite sized piece of perfectly ripe fruit, unique and ready to appreciate.

Edvard Grieg was a prolific composer, bringing us top ten favorites like the Suite from Peer Gynt, his piano concerto in A minor and all of his beautiful Lyric Pieces reflecting the identity of Norway. The basis for many were dances, natural surroundings and stories of trolls, fairies and mountain life. Many of those pieces he transcribed for both piano four hands (duet) and full orchestra. Wedding at Troldhaugen was composed as a gift to his wife on their 25 th anniversary. Reflecting the time period, rips for guests were planned months in advance and large reunions were huge achievement in cooperation. Of great interest to many is that Grieg himself wrote Programmatic Notes in the margins of this score. He tells us in words that the music starts with the servants arriving, the musicians tuning, the scurry of kitchen staff and the arrival of guests! So in telling a story in words, he writes the music to describe the entire Event of the Wedding. After a tender romantic tribute to his Love, the music returns to the after wedding party. Listen closely for the final door closing after the last guest departs!

Chopin wrote 4 Scherzos, (Jokes) and of them, this is my favorite. It needs no explanation for the audience, the form is simple but the music is complex. The opening reminds me of my sisters hiding behind trees in the woods to scare me out of my wits as I walked along! The sudden explosions and beats of silence are coupled with a gorgeous romantic melody. Hints of strife and heartbreak resolve in what can only be describes as musical fireworks at the end.

The last “Sample”is a John Philip Sousa march, Stars and Stripes , which was originally written for a full concert band. . I have loved Sousa marches my entire life. Both of my parents have and still do play in concert bands, and my father was a marching band member at U. of Nebraska. Vladimir Horowitz delighted Americans many years ago with a spectacular piano arrangement which he never wrote down. He just created it in his head and delighted everyone with his brilliant playing. My arrangement is inspired by Horowitz’ performance, as I traced his ideas from watching the recordings, and managed the notes to fit my hands! It’s short, loud, soft, fast…and unfortunately due to the acoustics I will have to ask you to resist clapping along during the performance. Save up all the claps for after if you wish!

Thank you for attending live performances of all types, the Art community would not continue to thrive were it not for you.
